For the longest time I have struggled with acne. Acne of all types it didn’t discriminate. I have tried all of types of products from witch hazel to any product that said “ helps clear acne” from Sephora or Ulta. I must have spent hundreds and hundreds (not thousands because I’m no baller LOL) in products trying to fix the problem. I also changed my diet from dairy free to vegan which did help a little with my psoriasis but not the acne. It wasn’t until I got fed up and decided that buying professional product from a professional esthetician was at this point going to be my best bet. I not only wanted nice skin without makeup on but everyone knows your makeup is only as good as the skin underneath. So I made an appointment with a esthetician friend of mine to work towards the changes I wanted. She set me up with Zein Obagi skin treatments which are medical grade products that I very much needed. They honestly worked a miracle on my skin. They were more then I
normally would have spent on myself but I figured if I had already spent all that money on products that didn’t work why not INVEST on products that actually might make a difference. My acne started going away, the inflammation was calming down and I was noticing a huge difference on how my skin looked with makeup. So I decided to once again invest in myself and try microneedling.
Before we get into the the process of microneedling lets talk about the benefits. Microneedling is a quick and virtually painless in office procedure that will give you smoother, firmer and younger looking skin. It induces collagen production and strengthens the epidermis (the top 3 layers of skin). It also helps reduce scarring and even reduces oil production and black heads!! Some other benefits are the improvement of skin
texture, treats cystic acne, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, reduces hyper pigmentation and uneven skin tone. After reading the benefits I couldn’t NOT do it am I right?!
Now lets get to the nitty gritty and talk about the process. I am going to be as thorough and short as possible. I want you to have all the information from my experience but I don’t want to go to in-depth about it because everyones experience will be different.
THE PROCESS
1) The first step was getting lathered in a numbing cream that stayed on for about 35 minutes.
2) Once my entire face was numb the esthetician took a pen with a small head that contained about 10+ needles that vibrates at a high power to pierce the superficial layer of your skin thousands of times over a few seconds. She did this process over and over for about 20 minutes focusing on areas that were my “trouble spots”.
* Because I was numb this didn’t hurt EXCEPT at the forehead but on a scale from 1-10 the pain level was only at about a 4. It was uncomfortable but not excruciating.
** You do bleed from this procedure but unless you saw it you wouldn’t know.
3) Once the blood was wiped off and I was cleaned up she put sunscreen on me and I was done!
* I was given an after care package that consisted of a gentle cleanser, sunscreen and face balm for hydration.
What to expect when your NOT expecting it. The process itself didn’t hurt. I did feel a slight burning sensation afterward but still nothing that would deter me from doing it again. I knew I would be red and that would fade after a day or two. What I wasn’t expecting was not being able to wear makeup afterwards for almost TWO WEEKS! I figured a week maybe BUT TWO! There is a peeling period and before that is finished it is recommended not to wear any foundation or to continue with any facial products. That part hurt a little, figuratively, because I was afraid my face would break out again from not using my skin care. Which it did but nothing I couldn’t control once I hopped back in my routine. After your done with the peeling process, the process is done with you.
I saw great results from just one session so I do plan on doing it again. Now that I have been through it I will have a better grasp on what is going on and what to expect, and that is all I want for you. My intention of this blog wasn’t to be like “do this its great and worth the money” which it is but wasn’t my point. I wanted to give you a better understanding of what the process of microneedling is so that when they come at you with
a jar of what looks like cooking fat to numb your face your not caught off guard. I am in no way saying that my experience is going to be yours. Everyone is different and thats what makes us, us.
